Happy Birthday Nigeria

Image
yay!!! Nigeria is 57!!  I remember being at a workshop in the United States sometime last year and all the participants had to introduce themselves, where they are from, what schools/organization they are affiliated to, and the research interest. When it reached my turn, I did introduce myself and I remember clearly the odd stares I got when I mentioned that I was Nigerian. Note that even though I was the only black person in this group, there were many international participants who chose not mention their home countries but rather claimed their host countries. A few days after, I got talking to a lady and while chatting about my research, we started talking about Canada and I began to share with her how much I love being in Canada. I was surprised when she suggested that I shouldn't have mentioned Nigeria while introducing myself a few days before. It was subtle but I understood it - the image of me, the perception of me was a tiny bit colored by the current realities...

The Highlight of my Summer

Image
It has been such a long time since I wrote for the blog as I have been crazy busy getting used to being a mother the second time. Oh yes, you read right - I'm a mom for the second time. I welcomed my son this summer. On one hand, it's the most exciting and gratifying experience ever - I mean what says schooling mum better than popping one in the middle of your Ph.D. But on the other hand, what says crazy better than that.  I look at my son and all the 'crazy' decision to have him now is well worth it. I am just so grateful and still in awe of the wonder I have been gifted by God with this new life.  No doubt many things including posting on the blog have suffered during this time as a hundred and one percent attention had to be given to the little man. I plan to share some of my pregnancy experience with you soon. While we are still trying to get our website up and running, I shall be posting on the blog more often and I will make an effort not to be MIA for ...

The Shade of Women Foundation

Image
Unfortunately, the incidence of domestic violence and abuse against women appears to be on the increase in Nigeria. Perhaps it isn't really on the increase but the access to social media has increased the awareness. People find it much easier to report abuse online especially through anonymous platforms because of the stigma still attached to victims of abuse and consequent separation or divorce. However, there are still many more unreported cases especially when women are not financially empowered to get a separation from an abusive partner. The Shade of Women foundation offers help and a temporary safe haven for women in this types of situation. They offer emergency shelter, counselling and legal services pro bono. The main goal of the organization is to reduce the extent and impact of domestic violence in Nigeria where domestic violence is reinforced by economic hardship, alcohol abuse, other antisocial behavior, and social and cultural inequality.  For more informa...
