Getting the attention of a potential supervisor

Image
To get the attention of your potential supervisor, your first email has to be clear, free of grammatical errors, not an obvious copy and paste type of email and of course, it should show a good knowledge of the research area you claim to be interested in. Salutation: your email should read Dear Dr/Prof. (Name) and NOT Dear Sir/Ma, because the later usually shows that you have sent the same email to a thousand and one professors (which is usually true). The professor knows this but he/she would like to see that you have put some effort in knowing his/her name. Introduction: Please keep your self introductions short and focus on what skills you have acquired in your course of learning. For example, instead of writing ‘I attended the best primary and secondary school, and proceeded to the best University in my city’, please focus on the techniques you have learnt and how your wealth of knowledge and experience is applicable to his/her research interest. It is also important to...

We all need a getaway

Image
It's almost that time of the year when everyone wants to take some time off work. It could be to a quiet little town just to relax or to a bubbly fun city to do something crazy. All alone to a beautiful island or out with the girls re-living the squad memories. All expressions of a break from work - rightly deserved. One way to get the most of your vacation is to plan ahead.  This helps to organize all the logistics of your vacation as well as the corresponding financial cost. However, if you are late on your arrangements, it is wise to use travel agencies as they sometimes have unbelievable deals that come in a stress-free package. These packages could include your flight, ground transportation, hotel booking, children attractions etc. One of such agencies is Dakada travels. Dakada travels are experts in tourist visits to Dubai (one of my favourite holiday cities). They help organize your trip, providing services like UAE tourist visa, tour packages, world wide flights...

What has a PhD got to do with love?

Image
When it comes to marriage, do the academic qualifications really matter? I have often heard some men and even women in certain circles criticize single women taking higher degrees (especially doctorates). The summary of their conversation is usually: 1. No man who is yet to attain that level of learning would be confident enough to approach a grad student 2. The ladies will probably be too proud of their achievements to settle for less academically. I believe this argument is flawed because; Not everyone desires to be married. So that lady who you are assuming  to be proud might just be uninterested in the institution. Also, e veryone needs a good dose of self confidence. So as a man who is interested in a graduate student, I suggest you build up your self confidence and approach her rather than criticize a young intelligent woman for her choices. What do you think? As a man, would you mind if your wife had a higher academic qualification? Should singl...

Conference travels and the baby bond

Image
How did it feel the first time you left home for a week long conference in another city? While others were planning to stay a few days extra to see this lovely city, were you busy thinking of how soon the conference will be over so you can get back to your baby? Hmmn -the life of a schooling mum. Now lets analyze this ; you have left baby in the excellent care of your spouse, mother or a trusted relative, so why do you still feel so apprehensive? Is it really about baby’s safety at this time or is it just the fact that you miss him and cannot bare to be away for so long? Or are you afraid he will bond with someone else so much that he will forget you? Or are you just worrying when you shouldn't? I think first times are always the most difficult. It will get better by the second time and further (I think). If you have been there, please share your experience.
