So sad the world lost the almost extinct gorilla, Harambe at the Cincinnati zoo recently. What's sadder is the circumstance around which the gorilla was killed and how much public backlash the mummy of the beautiful 4- year-old has received. The boy's mum has sadly become the butt of a lot of criticisms tagging her as irresponsible and uncaring but is this really true. What I find more baffling is that many of the commenters seem to have totally absolved the boy's father of any blame. You might ask me 'Why blame the dad if he wasn't at the zoo'? Here's the thing, the report says mum had several young children she needed to look after and she was managing to do a good job of that until her 4-year old went missing. Not that I think that anyone should be blamed for the little boy's accident (he was just being a child), but I feel that both parents should always take responsibility for their children. Prior to becoming a mom, I didn't give much thought to public breastfeeding. It was just something I felt a tad uncomfortable with for myself and I never thought I would have to do it. Fast-forward to baby's arrival and getting back to our normal lives where we had to go out sometimes, I found myself having to breastfeed in public (with a nursing cover). It is graduation season and I have read a number of amazing graduation stories. Stories of women who spent hours, days and weeks in the library, stories of women who had to temporarily sacrifice their social lives on the altar of academics, stories of late nights and missing the kids' school play and recitals. In recent times, I have come to respect and appreciate women who have chosen to be stay-at-home mums just as much as I do women who choose to work outside their homes. I believe it is a choice only a woman should make for herself not because she is forced or coerced into either choice. With every job, you deserve your wages, leave days, holidays, daily breaks and retirement but with parenting, once you start, you do not retire. It is a call for a lifetime. Motherhood is NOT a job - it is more than a job. So women who choose not to work outside their homes are justified and have every right to do so just like women who choose otherwise. We should not criticise one another's choices as I believe that one isn't better than the other. It is only a matter of choice. I started reading Three Sisters today and I must say it's been quite captivating. I have not read a novel in a long time as I often feel too 'busy' to do so but this novel is actually rekindling my attraction to fiction. Three Sisters by Tosin Otitoju is a story of three women with different lives, different struggles, and triumphs. Zuzu  who wants to be a nurse, but her fiancé is afraid to allow her that much freedom.  Mona,  a conservative Muslim wife, and mother. She has just slept with a stranger.
